About Us
Trans Chorus of San Diego is a space for trans, non binary and gender variant people to come together and express our authentic selves through music. We celebrate the diverse experiences of our members and the larger community with a musical focus on marginalized creators. We welcome people who have often been excluded from more traditional music ensembles and strive to create a sense of belonging while honoring all of our members’ intersectional identities.
Meet the Director
Lauren Gripenstraw (they/them) has been making music for over 26 years, starting with flute as a child and playing in band and orchestra, gradually pivoting to primarily singing in various ensembles and studying opera.
Lauren’s musical journey has continued through life and health challenges with many revelations along the way. Singing in choirs in college and studying voice for the first time came with valuable lessons about the depth of the bonds between chorus mates and the mental and physical health benefits of singing.
As Lauren came to better understand their gender as a non binary person, they also realized that the gendered rigidity often present in traditional choral settings is often a source of discomfort and stress for them and others who don’t fit neatly into gender boxes. However, Lauren’s love and passion for all things choral finally became fully realized through participation in LGBTQ+ choruses, which gave them a glimpse at what is possible with the intentional creation of choral communities.
Workshops
This summer, we’re excited to be hosting a series of music workshops specifically for trans, non-binary, and gender variant people who are interested in joining the chorus, but don’t know where to start. These workshops are designed to create a supportive and affirming space where participants can explore their musical interests, build skills, and connect with others in the community. Whether you’re into singing, playing instruments, or experimenting with music production, our sessions offer a chance to grow creatively and collaboratively. Join us this summer to make music in an environment that celebrates authenticity, self-expression, and mutual support!
